Angry Sharks head to the Hurricane Shelter!!!

By Jamel Wagner

10th March, 2016

The San Pedro Tiger Sharks head to the Hurricane shelter directly after losing their second home game in NEBL history so without a doubt you know they are furious. In fact even before their lost to Cayo Western Ballaz last week this upcoming face off against your Smart Belize Hurricanes was pin pointed, because after all the Hurricanes were actually the first team ever to hand the Sharks a home lost earlier this season. In fact I will go further and say the Western Ballaz should actually be thanking the Hurricanes for their big victory last week because I’m sure the game scheduled to tip off at Nine this Friday had the Defending champs completely distracted and unfocussed.

Now who could blame the Sharks for being distracted or maybe even a little scared, when the truth is the Hurricane only seems to be Getting Stronger. Far D Louriano is in through MVP form, they just got back Flash, Big Ben is back from vacation, I fully expect Jake the snake Leslie to break out his slump this week and well we all know Darwin Puppy Leslie is the sharks Daddy who they clearly miss. Not to mention the Hurricanes coach who knows all of San Pedro’s secrets, who can blame the sharks for being a little distracted last week.

However, don’t get it twisted this is no unfair fight, I definitely expect it to be a battle. After all this was the game the 2 time defending champs were waiting on ever since that first one point lost on the island, because ever since that lost I see the sharks import Chris Sutton getting that work in early every morning at Button Wood Bay Park and wherever National team star Gene Myvette is I’m sure he is getting that work in also. Their problem seems to be there output from the Edwards brothers, Jamal Kelly, and Raul ‘Thumpy’ Roches who have been absent on the stat sheets of late or simply just not giving enough.

So get there early folks because this just may be the best NEBL game this season. Plus there is always that chance of free food after these two teams meet dear I say, ‘PANADES’, ‘PANADES’, ‘PANADES’!!!

Bandits Accomplish Mission Impossible!!

A famous Rapper once said,” Vengeance is the sweetest joy next to getting….. Victories” or something to that effect. Last night at the Belize Elementary Gym, the lowly 2-4 Bandits set out to  accomplished just that Vengeance! Beating only the bottom seeded Thunderbolts (0-7) and the Orange Walk Rebels (1-4) at the UB GYM in the first half of the season and losing by only 4 points to the Hurricanes, achieving vengeance seemed impossible. It is said that a man down to its last hope might be the most perilous man to face, but we know the Hurricanes are scared of nothing and no one, so the game had to be played.

The shelter, as per usual, was packed and the horns were blowing and just like that the action had started. Right off the bat, the hurricanes were off to a 6-0 run; in fact, it wasn’t until after 4 minutes into the game that the Bandits managed to score their first bucket, which was quite the opposite compared to the last game’s 15 to 0 start in Belmopan. Nevertheless, the bandits would battle back and it was 12 - 8 with 3 minutes to go in the first, but more disturbingly, I had Nick Brown, the Bandits import, picking up his second foul at this point and the Hurricanes would finish the quarter with a eight to three run putting them up 20 -11 at the end of the first quarter.

At this moment I was thinking the Minister of Defence and new assistant coach for the Bandits was just a spectator with a better seat, as Akeem Watters drove and gave Brown what I thought was his third foul early in the second. Nevertheless, he stayed in the game and kept putting up what seemed like Bandits only offensive weapon. However, Farron Louriano was too much scoring even while he was doubled and it was 25 -13 with only a minute and a half elapsed from the game clock in the second quarter. Faron would finish with a game high 30 points. Then, even worst for the Bandits, Glency ‘cope’ Lopez was inserted and I thought this was going to get ugly if the bandits didn’t find a defensive solution quick. However, the perils of being a rookie in an elite league took him back to the bench quickly after he picked up his second foul and almost simultaneously the Bandits switched to a 2:3 zone defence where, before you know it, the bandits were back in the game at 35 -33 hurricanes up by only 2 . Brown then picked up his 4th foul, according to my eyes, but the desk had it as only 3 and had to come out the game. So with three minutes to go, the short-handed bandits, who lost Ian Lennan early in the first to a groin injury, tried their best to hang in there but it was difficult to rebound in a zone and the team still lack a point guard; high energy plays from Faron And Akeem push the hurricanes back up to a 45-36 lead at the end of the first half.

The third quarter was on its way and Ty Bradley picked up right where Faron left off by hitting a three right off the whistle, but Stephen Merte Williams finally got one down to answer him for the Bandits and was quickly followed by Brown with a three of his own. The Hurricanes had switch to a zone of their own but it was nowhere close to being as effective, so they quickly switched back to man where Brown picked up his fourth foul officially, in my eyes he should have been disqualified. Quite contrary to the last time Brown was pulled, the Bandits decided to go to the post with Kirk Chengo Burgess and ended up with a two point lead with strong offensive play by him,  Kyle Pascasio and even Stephen Merte Williams sanked a couple more buckets. However, these guys had to get a rest and before you know it, 3 straight turnovers by the bandits and the score was now 61 to 56 Hurricanes up just before the end of three.

The fourth was on its way and Belmopan’s weak bench continued with its sloppy play and before you knew it Hurricane was up 68 to 60 and looking like they were going to pull away, but the bandits ran back for their import. The hurricanes seemed to be harmless against the 2:3 zone, so the Bandits Battled back easily with strong play from Brown who hit a big three to tie the game at 70. Then big bad Puppy Leslie answered with a three of his own (73-70). The last five minutes was crazy with the two teams going tit for tat, punch for punch, and it this point we all know it was going to come down to who wanted it more and plane an simple, the BANDITS needed it more because if they lost this one again, all season hope would have been lost!

So it was 81 to 80 hurricanes with 1:15 on the clock when big bad  Brian ‘Beso’ White was just blocked and fouled Jarrel ‘Bird’ Velasquez, out of frustration, who made both free throws, ending up with 17 points on the night, to go up 81 to 82.  The bandits would then fake man out the inbounds and crawl right back into the zone to come up with another big stop and bird would head back to the line with 34.7 seconds to go after being fouled to stop the clock but only making one of two free throws 83-81. The next offensive play for hurricanes saw Brian pick up a crucial offensive foul which many hurricanes fan felt like was robbery but it seemed like witty play from brown to me, bird would once again only hit 1 of 2 free throws so the Hurricanes had a shot. Out of the time out, Randy Usher would fake a pass to Jacob Leslie and end up wide open for the three but the shot was in and out, ended up in Puppy Leslie’s hand, who also had a good look at three himself but it was not to be tonight. The final buzzer sounded and the Bandits defeated all odds and pulled off the impossible, giving the hurricanes its first loss of the season with a Final score 85 to 81!  Respect the NEBL great game!

Bandits Head to the Shelter for Revenge in Hopes

of giving the Hurricanes’ its first Lost!

By Jamel Wagner

25th February, 2016

The first half of the season is basically complete with the Smart Belize Hurricanes boasting an undefeated 6-0 record with only one back match pending. While the Belmopan bandits have one incomplete match at the midway point but there record is an ugly 2-4. Records aside these two teams are poised for a head to head collision at the Belize Elementary Gym at 9:00pm this Friday to kick off the second half of the season.

This clash will be one you once again cannot afford to miss. I say this because if you ask me the Hurricanes are really the ones to blame for the horrible first half of the Belmopan Bandits. Since after that 4 point defeat by ‘Hurricane Leslie’ on opening night the Bandits were never able to gather themselves to battle the rest of the season and simply haven’t found out how to close games! Nevertheless the Bandits does have hope because they were torched by Jacob Leslie for 29 points that night and his pass couple games he has been in a horrible slump. Plus the Bandits will also have the Minister of Defence on their bench Honourable John Saldivar as an assistant coach. You never know his defensive expertise might bring along some strong pick and roll defence we all know the Bandits need it.

However, hope my friends can be a double edge sword because this Hurricane seems to only be getting stronger as the struggles of one player seemed to have fired up the play of several others who comes off the bench, Namely Clency Lopez, Akeem ‘The Ice Man’ Watters, Big Ben Terry, and Leon the postman Williams. Not to mention Randy Usher who was inserted in the starting line-up last week to finish off what was left of the Orange Walk Punta Rebels and the NEBL new lead Singer Roger Reneau.

So line up at the shelter folks as the bandits comes with vengeance in their eyes and high hopes to hand the Hurricanes there first loss, but might just be sent home with another dagger in there heart as their hopes betrayed them and lead them to reach for the impossible because The Smart Belize Hurricanes are Stronger than ever!

Dangriga loses the Jankunu Clash!

By Jamel Wagner

14th February, 2016

The Slam Dunk contest was Ridiculous, but of course I caught that on the 101 replays on NBA TV because for me the only place to be was the big bad Birds Isle. I am convinced that the local T.V stations in Belize are allergic to money, refusing to air the local games live so that fans in the districts or persons locally not able to find a babysitter can enjoy these remarkable NEBL games. Especially on a night where the gates are competing with slam dunk contest and valentine dinners, a fan can watch both the game the event and dine at home if they would just step up to the plate.

Nevertheless, the drums, as I anticipated earlier this week, were rolling and the battle to show who the best Jankunu  Ballerz are was on its way. It started out with both teams, the Belize Hurricanes and The Dangriga Warriors, going step for step and keeping it very close in the first quarter, until the very end when energy was inserted off the Hurricanes bench in the form of Akeem “The Ice man” Watters who forced the warriors into sloppiness which gave the Hurricanes the 17-11 lead at the end of that quarter! It got even worst for the warriors early in the second quarter, as Clency “Coope” Lopez was inserted to start this  quarter and diced up the warriors defense, dishing out a couple assists right away and finishing at the rim, thus easily pushing the lead to 11 with five and a half minutes to go in the first half!

The hurricanes maintained that lead until about two minutes to go when the hurricanes went deeper in their bench and the Warriors starters Edgar Mitchell and James Ewing took immediate advantage of this, striking at Puppy Leslie, who got no rest in the first half, to bring the lead down to just 6 at the half!    In the third, the game got even closer as Mitchell and Ewing continued their strong play and manage to get some much needed help from Nayib, Bowen, and Lisbey off the bench as well to draw as close as two points with 5 minutes to go in the third. However, the defense and depth of this hurricane was just too much for the warriors to handle as the hurricanes got great efficiency from most of the team boasting, five players in double figures and five players with two or more steals at the end of the game; comfortably out danced the warrior. Proving that the city could Jankunu and ball with anybody anywhere with a 70 to 61 final score!

Jankunu in February????

By Jamel Wagner

10th February, 2016

This Saturday night at the Big Bad Bird’s Isle, for one night only, the Drums will be Rolling as the NEBL

current number 2 seed, Dangriga Warriors, face off against the league leading Smart Belize Hurricanes for

what I believe will be the game of the week! Now one verses two normally would need no justification

or defense to prove the reason why this is the game of the week, but after losing their first game of the

season, people still aren’t really convinced that the Warriors are the real deal. However, after back to back to

back victories, slaying down two former playoff teams the Bandits and the Western Ballerz, without their

star point guard, Daniel "Buddy" Nolberto and finally bringing in an imported player in James Ewing to play

with the team, they certainly look like championship competitors to me; not to mention the warriors are

now coached by Mattew Smiling who stated clearly last weekend on PG tv that he was fired by the

hurricanes, so he clearly has this game marked on his calendar!

Now, after all that, there is still one more thing, ‘the drums’ of the Dangriga Warriors, who travel to every

game in support of their team that motivates their team to burst out the Jankunu dance on their

opponents, dominating the battle in the paint with the league leading rebounder Macario Augustine and

with constant attacks by Mitchel and Quinten Bowen to the rim. In addition, they have the king of

the Jankunu dance, Aqueem Trapp, who is the peskiest defender in the league and can frustrate any point

guard into multiple turnovers!

Now the Jankunu dance, many believe, belongs to the south and the Dangriga Warriors, but the truth is

it’s also in the roots of the creole people who are direct descendants of the enslaved Africans, while our

southern breddrin were never enslaved. Nevertheless, this Saturday night the Smart Belize Hurricanes

will use the griga warrior’s drums against them and show once and for all who the best Jankunu ballers

are by dancing inside and out of the paint, showing off there long range ability and there team depth.

Furthermore there is a lot of rumors going around as to why the Hurricanes left the confines of their

hurricane shelter to take on the warriors; well let me clear that up once and for all. The Hurricanes are

playing from the Island so that as soon as they beat the warriors, Coach Smiling, and the drums they can

easily pack up and go straight home in mr. ‘John Canoe’.

“The Battle for the Jewel”!

By Jamel Wagner

10th February, 2016

With any good love affair there is always a coveted jewel, and two persons, thing, or in this case teams

battling for sole ownership and possession of that very Jewel. Valentine’s Day is coming up so the league

hit the jackpot when it scheduled this matchup between the Belize City No limit and the Smart Belize

Hurricanes for this Friday night at the big Birds Isle, so both teams at the end of this matchup can decide

who really possesses the love of the city!

This Friday night, the city just needs to sit back and relax while the battle takes place on the court. Sure

enough, Michael babbles and the No limit team will try to wine and dine the fans with his smooth

crossover and honey sweet jumper and Greg "Chippy" Rudon will swift in from the left with a dozen D

Rose like Penetrations. However, if they are not able to deliver a box full of chocolates from there bigs

and figure out how to get there teammates involved, they may see Mother Nature’s Best kept Secret

swipe right out there arms!

This is because the Smart Belize Hurricanes will be coming with the charm

and the wit, keeping their money at home with veteran players like Darwin "Puppy" Leslie and Far D

Louriano, who can throw it down in the kitchen serving up their own slam dunk meals.  If that is not

enough, the youthful charm of Clency Lopez, Leroy Louriano and Jacob Leslie will rhyme there way pass

the defense, dishing out assists and knocking down jumpers from close and far. Finally, if all that wit,

rhyme, and charm don’t work, expect the bad boys of the Hurricanes, lead by the "Beast Beso" White, Ty

Bradley, Akeem the "Ice man" Watters and the rest of the bench mob to just move in and take the jewel

away with the strong arm approach, letting the city know that "you dah fi me" and no lee Soulja can’t just

come brake up what we got! “You dah Fi me”

What do Sharks do when a Viscious Huricane strikes?

By Jamel Wagner

4th February, 2016

This Saturday night, when the two time defending champs San Pedro Tiger Sharks host the Smart Belize Hurricanes on La Isla Bonita, we will find out exactly what sharks do when a Hurricane strikes or what they should do when a hurricane strike. Normally the San Pedro Tiger Sharks just flash there sharp teeth offense guided by the Edwards brothers and the fundamentalist Jamal Kelly and flash there muscle with Raul ‘thumpy’ Roches and Andrew ‘Bynum’ Ortiz and they would scare off any Ballaz, Bandit, Warrior, Rebel, Soulja or storm that comes there way. In fact with their undefeated record on the caye and the addition of import Chris Sutton, who lead there team in scoring last week, and Belize national team superstar Gene Myvette, one would think the Sharks have absolutely nothing to worry about this Saturday night.

That belief, my friends, would be mischievous, naïve, imaginative or plain out foolish. In fact, I would be doing you all a disservice if I didn’t raise the red flags, sound the alarm, and put the Hurricane warnings out because this storm hitting the island Saturday is no regular storm. This Saturday night storm will be bolstered with none other than the former Tiger Sharks head coach, Darrell Bovel; former tiger sharks MVP player Darwin Puppy Leslie; NEBL leading scorer Jacob “Snake” Leslie and former MVP Far D Louriano. Not to mention Leroy flash Louriano, who I heard is almost 100% healthy, and Brian the beast ‘Beso’ White. That, my friend, is just the first half of the storm and if that doesn’t send the sharks to hide in deep waters like ”Smart” sharks do when a hurricane hit, the most viscious part of the storm to strike after the eye is even more terrifying and honestly, on paper, this is where the tiger sharks are clearly out matched with defensive storm walls like Ty Bradley, AKeem Watters, Leon Williams, Glency “Coope” Lopez and Big Ben Terry, they can clearly penetrate the tough sharks' skin and rip them apart!

So my advice to the Undefeated Tiger Sharks on home territory is to ‘tek deep mi bredda’; do the ‘Smart’ thing and Ruuun because you haven’t seen a storm like this yet!!!!
